Overview
The slow boat down the Mekong is one of Southeast Asia's classic journeys β two unhurried days by traditional wooden boat, drifting between the LaoβThai border town of Huay Xai and the UNESCO town of Luang Prabang, with an overnight stop at the riverside village of Pakbeng. It's a journey, not a transfer: the point is the river itself, the jungle-clad banks, and the villages that live along it.
You settle into the boat as the Mekong winds through northern Laos, stopping at riverside communities along the way, and overnight in Pakbeng before continuing to Luang Prabang. Near the end, many boats call at the Pak Ou Caves, a dramatic limestone cliff at the mouth of the Nam Ou packed with thousands of Buddha statues left by pilgrims over centuries. It's the most atmospheric β and most local β way to arrive in Luang Prabang.
