Quick answer

The lake’s real life, not a staged market.

Overview

About 10km south of Siem Reap, the land runs out and the Tonle Sap begins — the Great Lake of Cambodia, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, and home to communities who live entirely on the water. On this half-day trip you take a traditional wooden boat out among stilt houses, floating markets, schools and shops, and see a way of life shaped completely by the rise and fall of the lake.

This is the real, working life of the Tonle Sap rather than a staged show — fishing families, boats as the only streets, and the seasonal rhythm that swells the lake several times over in the wet season. Your guide explains how the community lives, farms and moves with the water. It pairs naturally with Siem Reap's markets and the Artisans d'Angkor silk workshop.

Frequently asked questions

Which floating village do we visit?
We choose the village that is most authentic and least touristy for your season and the water level — your guide confirms on the day. The aim is real lake life, not a set-piece.
Is it better in wet or dry season?
Both work. In the wet season (roughly Aug–Nov) the lake is at its fullest and most dramatic; in the dry season the stilt houses stand tall above the shrunken water. Your guide explains the difference.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes — it is an easy boat trip. Life jackets are available; let us know ages at booking.
How long does it take?
About 4 hours including transfers and the boat ride.
Can I combine it with the temples?
Yes — many guests pair a morning at Angkor with an afternoon on the lake. Message us to build the day.
